Technology advancement is seriously growing at a fast pace. The world is becoming a small global village where one can reach anybody at any time via modern technology facilities. Unlike in the olden days when we have to wait for over a week before our letter will be delivered.
Today, we hear of machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence(AI), Robotics, Automation, Blockchain Technology, etc. All these were made possible by the same rapid development in wireless communication, like 4G, and 5G data connections. And today we can even talk of 6G.
One of the beautiful things about this technological advancement is that it has helped companies to enhance their processes, develop new disruptive technology products and services, and provide creative solutions based on customer feedback and market needs.
In this article, let’s digress by exploring the wireless network generation advancement and what we should know about 6G Network in particular.
The wireless network has advanced from the first generation to the fifth generation and the expected sixth generation.
What then is the Sixth Generation (6G) wireless network?
6G technology is the sixth generation of wireless technology that will improve and enhance our current mobile network connectivity and infrastructure through greater optimization and higher data transfer speeds. 6G technology will use a higher frequency spectrum than 5G and it is expected to provide higher bandwidth capacities and lower latency.
Most importantly, this technology will also help to improve the performance of current communication standards to such an extent that it will revolutionize the technology industry. With enhanced communication capabilities, we will experience a fast technological revolution and development in other sectors like education, finance, transportation, and healthcare.
Advances in healthcare will lead to faster diagnostic procedures, allowing doctors to provide prompt and accurate treatment to patients. The finance industry will benefit from low latency and high-speed financial transactions. The transportation industry will also benefit from the technology, as 6G technology speeds will enable some modern automatic features.
However, wireless systems of the future are expected to dramatically improve current wireless capabilities in network throughput, IoT connectivity, and latency. This will lead us to understand how these communication technologies have evolved over years.
First Generation(1G)
This is the first generation of wireless networks which enabled portable cellular network devices. 1G was developed in the 1980s and introduced the world to wireless data network connections, focusing mainly on voice communication. The speed was however very slow compared to what we have today.
Second Generation(2G)
The second generation of wireless networks was first introduced in 1990/91 and brought with it some wireless data services that enabled us to connect to the Internet via mobile devices, though very slowly. 2G was introduced with two iterations namely: 2.5 and 2.75, with data rates between 56kb/s-115kb/s and 384kb/s, respectively. 2G network also introduced some mobile-enabled services like WAP, MMS, and SMS.
Third Generation(3G)
The third generation of wireless technology was introduced in 2004/2005. It supported the transitions from data carriers to data users. 3G improved upon its predecessor by adding features such as video calling, mobile TV, location-based services, and faster data transfer speeds, from 8-20Mbps. As the world started to rely on mobile networks for internet use and communication, the industry had to improve on technology to cope with higher demand, which meant 3.5 and 3.75 became available. This brought about mobile email and person-to-person gaming features.
Fourth Generation(4G)
The fourth generation wireless network which came in 2009, brought a lot of exciting features compared to 3G in the mobile technology ecosystem. With it, we were able to stream live movies on mobile devices and send messages. 4G network also made it possible to download and upload files faster than 3G phones and handle simultaneous voice and data calls. The speed of file downloading was also very fast.
Fifth Generation(5G)
This generation of wireless network technology systems promises faster speeds, reduced latency, and increased connections, leading to many more devices being connected simultaneously.
Moreover, in addition to its increased speed and reliability, 5G networks will enable many new gadgets and IoT sensors to be connected worldwide with breakneck mobile data speeds. It will also provide reliable wireless connectivity for more users in different locations.

However, the sixth generation of wireless technology is projected to advance and improve the capabilities of the latest 5G networks and offer enhanced coverage, improved functionality, and ultra-fast mobile data speeds and connections. 6G is expected to support billions of IoT devices worldwide.
The Sixth Generation wireless network is expected to be incredibly fast; with data speeds of up to 1Tbps – at least 1000 times the speed of 5G connections available today. Imagine downloading a two-hour movie in one to three seconds. Yes, this can be possible and that is the type of speed we can expect from 6G.
It will operate with a very high frequency (millimeter wave frequencies), and radio frequencies with wavelengths shorter than one millimeter. The one certain thing is; 6G will surpass anything we have experienced so far in terms of network speed.
Though 6G is not yet launched, we wait and expect it sooner than later, as top world countries and top tech hubs and innovations have already started building the necessary infrastructures and technological gadgets that will enable its emergence.
