Human Capital Development

Human Capital Development is simply the process of improving organization’s employee performance, resources and capabilities. It can also be referred as the means by which organizations and establishments do improve the skills of their workforce through the act of training. Human capital development is mostly done to improve the productivity of both the employees and organizations .

Human capital development is a very important aspect of an organization’s growth, because for an establishment to grow it is as a result of the input from the employees.

Apart from organizations or business establishment providing human capital development to their staff, individuals also do this development to improve on individual skill in the area of specialization or professionalism. In this case, it  is referred to as personal development.

This development can come in different forms, but mostly it is centralized on education, technical skills, communication skills, personal relationship and so on.

Educational qualification is one of the things that are required for one to get employed nowadays. This is so because modern business processes and daily activities is being documented and without being educated one cannot do that or take any role where such embargo has been put. Technical skill that is a must today is the ability to operate modern computers and perform specific tasks with it. Many organizations have moved from the traditional method of filing and heaping document in a shelf to the modern method of hosting and storing data in the cloud through some software like SaaS and cloud networking. For organizations not to be left behind in the train of tech, they normally provide an avenue for all the staff to be trained and developed on the basic knowledge of ICT in relation to their works.

Human capital development is not only observed in private sectors or private business enterprises. Government on their own hand, from time to time do organize trainings for the civil servants. Federal and State government through their ministries, parastatals and agencies have adopted this staff development strategies to inculcate the modern and necessary skills to the civil servants. For example, the federal ministry of education upon recruitment of new teachers into the federal unity schools,  do train them on computer appreciation and other relevant technologies  that may be necessary for their work. They also provide them with some relevant devices.

Communication and personal interaction is another important aspect of personal/human capital development.

In a country like Nigeria that have English as her lingua franca, because of the numerous ethnic and tribal languages. It is expected that every employee will be able to read, write and communicate fluently to an average level in English language. It is also expected that one should improve his/her communication and personal relationship/interaction skill on a regular basis. This is why most organization do provide a platform that allows their workers to undergo part time program or better still take online courses like grammarly to boost their communication skill.

From the foregoing, it can be observed that human capital development is a very good tool in a work place for optimum productivity and profitability. Though the methodology and modalities do differ from place to place which is proportional to the services being provided.
