Appraisal is a tool which companies, organizations, business establishment use to review the work performance of their staff. Appraisal is commonly called Performance appraisal. It is mostly done annually to evaluate the input of each worker in the work place.
It helps employers and managers of different establishment to checkmate the seriousness of their workers. Employees’ welfare can be improved with the help of performance appraisal.
Here are some of the basic steps to achieve a good performance appraisal.
1. Set a performance appraisal standard
Performance appraisal standards are set to ensure that the objectives and goals of the organization are achieved. The standard is based on the positions and not on individual. The expected behavior in the work place should be clearly explained to the employees. This will ensure strict compliance.
2. Communicate the set standard to the employees
To ensure that the set standard is carried out, it must be clearly communicated to the members of the organization. This will help the management to apply the appraisal standard without fear or favour. Trainings should be done regularly to improve on the staff.
3. Performance measurement
The set appraisal standards should be regularly checked and measured to verify it’s outcome. Some of the performance expressed in numeric terms like, cost, quantity, timeliness can be easily measured.
4. Actual performance and set standard comparison
The outcome of the individual performance is to be compared to the set appraisal standard. This comparison will determine if set standard is met or not. Here documentation of the performance appraisal should be used to highlight results and actions.
5. Discuss the appraisal with the employee
On this step managers are expected to present the outcome of the appraisal to the employees. He or she will also give further directives on what he or she expects from the employee. Here suggestions and recommendations from the employees are also treated. To identify and prepare for differences of opinion, management can ask employees to complete and submit a self-evaluation prior to the appraisal meeting. The key point to keep in mind is that the manager’s ability to remain calm and civil will have a significant impact on the employee’s confidence, motivation and future performance.
6. Implementation
The final step in the appraisal process is the implementation. This involves some sort of reward, promotion and any other form of appraisal that can be used to make employees happy. It is mostly done based on the performance. The lapses in the set appraisal standard will also be discussed.
Lastly, the appraisal standard have to be considered for it’s retention or it should be discarded. This is based on the performance of the employees.
